'The Lab'
'The Lab' is situated at Speed Theory Calgary throughout the winter in the extreme mornings and evenings. Throughout the summer, it pours out onto the roads, trails, and pathways across the continent and beyond. 'The Lab' is a diverse collection of athletes from all walks of life and in various stages of their careers and family development. It focuses on the masters athlete (age 25 and up) that views cycling or triathlon as a hobby and part of a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. While they come regularly, it does not cater to the professional athlete. It also does not cater to the unmotivated athlete uninterested in progression.
Inception
I began 'The Lab' as a means for my cycling team to train effectively throughout the winter and build social bonds that would transfer directly, and positively, to the road. Over the years, the word got out that a road specific training group was operating twice a week in the evening, and others wanted in. The classes grew and I eventually added 4 more sessions to the week to accommodate the increased numbers and athlete's schedules. I have been extremely fortunate to still have a very large amount of my athletes from my very first year. I take pride in this and attribute it to my hard work ensuring the classes are effective and continue to develop. These two points are the crux of 'The Lab'.
The Current Model (2012/2013)
I currently have just over 90 athletes that put their cycling progression (focusing in the winter) in my hands. This is an enormous responsibility and one I don't take lightly. Whether the athletes are with me to excel at (or simply complete) race events, or challenging cycling vacations, or any number of goals, they trust me to prepare them for the task. I require a lot out of them too: motivation, faith, and commitment. I am the first to tell my cyclists there is no secret other than consistency and frequency. It may sound cliche, but it is true. The ability to progress through consistency and frequency is key and an integral part of what I provide to my athletes. 'The Lab' is a constantly evolving test group of n = >90 subjects that are willing to be guinea pigs (very fit ones!) for me to develop as a relevant masters coach and provide me with feedback on various test markers throughout the season. This feedback is used to develop my training sessions at my other spin locations. For example, the current classes at Stenia Health and High Performance will benefit directly from my years of experience and learning with my test subjects.
The Future
My goal is to constantly develop the sessions involved with 'The Lab'. The ability to handle the diverse range of athlete, athletic history, and overall goals in a group environment is a very challenging problem. One that is exciting and intimidating. Experience, adaptibility, openness, evolution, accountability, and remaining positive are the values I will continue to embrace. I will continue to provide my cutting edge research to my training classes so that they can take full advantage of what I am constantly learning.
If you are interested in being part of 'The Lab' and a great group of people, contact me and I will let you know if there is an opportunity.
